3rd Bluewave - the beta so far

Ok, a day after the beta for the 3rd Bluewave, originally described as "beyond imagination", has come out, I have developed a few opinions.

First what is new:  several new skins, a fullscreen music playback mode, a calculator, brightness and speed controls for video playback.

Apparently what they meant in the original release was "we can't imagine what we'll do for 3 yet...".  Nothing revolutionary here, it was definitely over sold and under delivered - somewhat frustrating.  If you ignore the fact that this release isn't a revolutionary change, it is definitely a SOLID progressive update.

The extra video features were definitely missing and watching a few videos on the player, I definitely wanted them months ago (esp. the brightness control).   I have not yet played much with them, but I will definitely appreciate them next time I do watch a video.

Some people dismiss the calculator as useless clutter.  I don't agree.  The YP-P2 is slowing evolving into a full PDA type device.  It holds music, pictures, contacts, ebooks, I even have bus maps, bluetooth to the phone and I almost don't need to pickup a second electronic device (the phone has to be in a pocket somewhere, but I don't need to touch it).  A month ago, while reaching past my P2 for a calculator, I found myself thinking that a calculator function would be a great extension for the device, and lo, here it is.  True, it isn't a scientific calcuator and it lacks memory functions, but it does 99% of what you would normally need a calculator for in day to day tasks.

Perhaps the 4th bluewave will realize the full potential of the new skins we find in the 3rd bluewave.  At first glance, they just appear to be new skins, but a deeper look at how programming works and you will realize that this forms the foundation for user created skins - a feature that appears to be promised for the next bluewave.  Maybe the ability to express our imaginations creatively is what they originally intended, and the time required just grew beyond expectations.   If so, kudous to the Samsung team for getting a beta of the current snapshot out on the promised date.

The last feature, full screen music playback - minor fluff for sure, but since I don't have lyrics for my songs, perhaps I am missing something special here and just don't know it.  Either way, I don't watch the screen much when I listen.  Maybe I will be wiser and happier with the feature in the future.  Either way, it does not detract from the device.

Conclusion: While disappointing in scope, everything is there is a solid, progressive improvement and everything seems to work great.  For a beta, it seems to be pretty darn stable.  If you don't mind beta, give it a try!
